Adsorption of Organic Acids on Blast Furnace Sludge

چکیده
This paper describes the adsorption of two organic (acetic and citric) acids on the blast furnace sludge, a representative by-product of the steelmaking industry. By PIXE, XRD, BET and SEM methods, it was shown that blast furnace sludge is a complex heterogeneous material with a specific surface area of s = 31.46 m g, composed mainly of amorphous phase (w = 76.2 %), calcite (w = 9.9 %), magnetite (w = 6.3 %) and kaolinite (w = 2.2 %). Chemically, blast furnace sludge is dominated by O (w = 42.23 %) and C (w = 31.74 %). The adsorption process is analyzed using the theories of Freundlich and Langmuir. The experimental data were better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. The negative Gibbs energy values indicate the spontaneous nature of adsorption. After adsorption the surface image changes in the BFS were observed, and BET surface area increased when acetic acid was adsorbed. Contrarily, blast furnace sludge became almost non-porous in the case of citric acid adsorption and BET surface area decreased significantly.

Kinetic Aspects of Methylene Blue Adsorption on Blast Furnace Sludge
In the global steel industry, more than 400 kg of solid byproduct is generated per ton of steel produced. Most of this by-product (70–80 %) is in the form of slag, which is used largely in the cement industry and for road and civil construction. The remaining solid by-products can be classified as dusts, sludge and oily/non-oily mill scale. Traditionally, the majority of generated dust, sludge ...

In this study, the blast furnace slag was used as absorbing bed and then, its ionic adsorption was studied. For this reason, various experimental parameters such as pH, contact time and the primary ion concentration were investigated. The remaining concentrations of ions such as; Mn2+ and Fe2+ in water were measured by atomic adsorption spectroscopy. The chemical and p...

Filtration technology is well established in the water sector but is limited by inability to remove targeted contaminants, found in surface and groundwater, which can be damaging to human health. This study optimises the design of filters by examining the efficacy of seven media (fly ash, bottom ash, Bayer residue, granular blast furnace slag (GBS), pyritic fill, granular activated carbon (GAC)...

A new method has been presented, which leads to a significant improvement of the adsorption ability of blast furnace slag (BFS). An ultra-high pressure water jet mill cavitation disintegrator and a controlled vacuum freeze dryer were used to disintegrate amorphous BFS. Specific surface areas of both BFS and disintegrated slag (BFS-D) were measured using the S method. BFS-D was obtained with an ...

Water pollution due to organic contaminants is a serious issue because of acute toxicities and carcinogenic nature of the pollutants. Among various water treatment methods, adsorption is supposed as the best one due to its inexpensiveness, universal nature and ease of operation. Many waste materials used include fruit wastes, coconut shell, scrap tyres, bark and other tannin-rich materials, saw...
